DHAKA, Bangladesh, May 11 (UPI) -- Bangladesh executed a convicted serial killer by hanging Tuesday and oversaw his burial within hours, the BBC reported.
Ershad Shikder was hanged shortly after midnight in the southwestern town of Khulna, after he was convicted of seven murders, and accused of dozens more.
Formerly an influential member of both main political parties throughout his criminal career, Shikder amassed thousands of dollars by extortion and theft and then used it to buy political influence.
At his trial, one of his bodyguards testified Shikder was responsible for at least 20 killings.
The road outside Khulna District Prison was sealed off by police as his body was handed over to his first wife for burial.
The funeral went peacefully under police observation, despite anonymous threats it would be disrupted.
