Britney Spears weds, gets annulment

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Pop star Britney Spears spent the past weekend getting married in Las Vegas, then having the short-lived marriage annulled, People.com reported Monday.

Spears, 22, married Jason Allen Alexander, a childhood friend from Spears' Louisiana hometown, in what is being called "a joke."

"On January 3rd, Britney Spears and a friend took a joke too far by getting married. Ms. Spears and Mr. Alexander have filed for an annulment which will become official on Monday, January 5," said a statement released by Jive Records, Spears' label.

According to reports, Spears, wearing a baseball cap and jeans, was escorted down the aisle by a limo driver as she married Alexander at the Little White Wedding Chapel on the Strip.

Spears and Alexander reportedly spent New Year's Eve and the subsequent days together. After partying Friday night at the Palms Casino Hotel, a hotel bellman drove Spears and Alexander, in a lime-green limo, to the wedding chapel. After learning they needed a marriage license, the couple went to a Las Vegas courthouse in the early hours Saturday, where they were granted a license.

Following the ceremony, the newlyweds returned to a luxury suite at the Palms. Later Saturday, Spears was seen dining with her manager, her brother, Palms owner George Maloof and other friends at a hotel restaurant.
