James Brady fears freedom for his attacker

WASHINGTON, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- Giving presidential shooter John Hinckley unchaperoned visits with his family would create fear for James Brady, one of his victims, Brady's wife says.

Sarah Brady gave her and her husband's views in response to Hinckley's request to leave a Washington mental hospital for brief, unchaperoned visits with his family, according to a letter to the court released Wednesday, the Washington Post said.

Brady, a former White House press secretary, was injured and partially paralyzed in the March 30, 1981, shooting, in which Hinckley tried to kill President Ronald Reagan.

U.S. District Judge Paul L. Friedman has been holding hearings, the final one Wednesday, on Hinckley's request.

Hinckley, 48, has been confined to the St. Elizabeths Hospital since 1982, when a jury found him not guilty by reason of insanity.

In a letter to Freidman and released by the judge, Sarah Brady said Hinckley "has wreaked havoc on the lives of so many people, including those of my husband and family. If he were indeed well, wouldn't he feel uncontrollable remorse. To the contrary, he has never demonstrated any sorrow for, nor apologized to Jim Brady or the other victims."
