Historic bridge arsonists strike again

WINTERSET, Iowa, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- Investigators will meet Monday to go over evidence in the arson of a historic bridge made famous in Robert Waller's novel "The Bridges of Madison County."

The Hogback Bridge near Winterset was the third Iowa bridge in a year to be set ablaze, the Des Moines Register reported Sunday.

Passers-by saw the fire around 5:45 p.m. Saturday and had extinguished it by the time the fire department got there. The damage was minimal and covered only about a square foot.

Last week, a covered bridge near Delta in Keokuk County was destroyed in a fire that has been ruled an arson.

The Delta covered bridge, the oldest of its kind west of the Mississippi River, burned to the ground on Thursday, the one-year anniversary of an arson fire at the famed Cedar Bridge in Madison County.

There have not been any arrests in any of the arsons, the Register said.
