WASHINGTON, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- An attorney for presidential assailant John Hinckley says the man is not a risk to himself or others, the Washington Post reported Wednesday.
Attorney Barry Levine represented Hinckley, who lives on a secured ward of St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington, before U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman to let him make a series of 10 unsupervised visits to his family's home in Virginia.
Hinckley has been at St. Elizabeths since 1982 when a federal jury found him not guilty by reason of insanity in the March 1981 shootings of President Ronald Reagan and three others.
"There have been five doctors who have looked at Mr. Hinckley," Levine told Friedman at a hearing Tuesday. "All five of these doctors without any exception found that Mr. Hinckley, if released, will not be a danger to himself or others."
Hinckley, 48, has repeatedly sought additional freedom in recent years and usually has met resistance from federal prosecutors who have argued in the past that he remains athreat.
