Whitfield rejoins Capitals

WASHINGTON, Feb. 1 -- The Washington Capitals re-acquired center Trent Whitfield on Friday, claiming him off waivers from the New York Rangers.

Whitfield had played one game for New York after being claimed off waivers from Washington on January 16. In 25 games for the two teams, he has one assist and 25 penalty minutes.

A 5-11, 203-pound checking center, Whitfield had two goals and four assists in 61 games during his 2000-01 rookie campaign with the Capitals, playing every game following his recall from the American Hockey League on Nov. 23.

The 24-year-old was the 100th overall selection in the 1996 draft by the Boston Bruins. He signed with the Capitals on Sept.1, 1998.
