Lions waive punter Araguz

PONTIAC, Mich., Dec. 18 -- With punter John Jett ready to return from a calf injury, the Detroit Lions on Tuesday waived veteran Leo Araguz.

Araguz was signed to replace an injured Jett on November 27, and he averaged 41.9 yards per punt in games against Chicago, Tampa Bay and Minnesota.

Jett suffered the injury in Detroits 29-27 loss to Denver on Thanksgiving. He is second in the NFL this season with a net average of 35.5 yards per punt.

Araguz spent four years with the Oakland Raiders from 1996-99, averaging 42.9 yards per punt in 51 games and placing 86 punts inside the 20. He was with St. Louis in training camp but lost the job to John Baker.
