Philadelphia 6, Washington 1

WASHINGTON, Sept. 18 -- Jeremy Roenick had a goal and two assists and Pavel Brendl had two goals and an assist as the Philadelphia Flyers spoiled the debut of Jaromir Jagr in a Washington Capitals uniform Tuesday night with a 6-1 victory in the exhibition opener for both teams.

Roenick, who left the Phoenix Coyotes as a free agent in the offseason, scored an unassisted goal 14 seconds into the third period that made it 3-0.

He later assisted on both of Brendl's goals and delivered a handful of hits.

Brendl, acquired in the deal that sent Eric Lindros to the New York Rangers, scored twice on the power play 3:15 apart, giving Philadelphia a 5-1 advantage with 12:45 to play. He set up John LeClair's goal that closed the scoring.

The Flyers dealt Lindros to the Rangers after the Capitals opted to trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins for Jagr, who scored 2:44 into the third period to get Washington within 3-1.

That was the only shot that beat Roman Cechmanek, who made 16 saves for Philadelphia. The Flyers scored twice in 20 shots against Olaf Kolzig before rattling Corey Hirsch with four goals on nine shots.
