Lindsay, a 30-year-old unrestricted free agent, is an original Panther, playing six seasons with the team before he was traded to the Calgary Flames in September 1999. He split last season between the Flames and San Jose Sharks, totaling one goal, 13 assists and 126 penalty minutes in 68 games.

"Bill adds a great deal of character and leadership to our lineup," Panthers assistant general manager Chuck Fletcher said. "He's a veteran with speed and energy, and we're pleased that he's coming back to South Florida, where he has played a big part of our team's greatest moments."

Lindsay broke into the NHL with the Quebec Nordiques in 1991 but was a member of the Panthers when they made their run to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1996.

In 658 NHL games with Quebec, Florida, Calgary and San Jose, the 6-foot, 190-pound winger has 78 goals and 129 assists.
