Major League Baseball -- Suspended Pittsburgh Pirates first
baseman Kevin Young and Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Mike
DiFelice two games each for their roles in an August 14 fight.
Chicago Cubs -- Purchased the contract of pitcher Juan Cruz from
West Tenn of the Southern League (AA); placed pitcher Felix
Heredia on the 15-day disabled list with a sore arm.
Florida Marlins -- Placed pitcher Vic Darensbourg on the 15-day
disabled list, retroactive to August 20, with left shoulder
inflammation; purchased the contract of pitcher Benito Baez from
Calgary of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).
Montreal Expos -- Recalled outfielder Curtis Pride from his
rehabilitation assignment at Ottawa of the International League
(AAA) and activated him from the 15-day disabled list.
New York Yankees -- Activated pitcher Orlando Hernandez from the
15-day disabled list; recalled first baseman Nick Johnson from
Columbus of the International League (AAA); optioned pitchers Ted
Lilly and Randy Choate to Columbus.
Oakland Athletics -- Agreed to terms with pitcher Jeremy
Bonderman and outfielder Marcus McBeth.
BASKETBALL
Portland Trail Blazers -- Signed forward Zach Randolph, their
2001 first-round pick, to a three-year contract; signed center
Priest Lauderdale to a one-year contract.
HOCKEY
Florida Panthers -- Re-signed defenseman Lance Ward; agreed to
terms with right wing David Morisset and center Matt Herr.
Phoenix Coyotes -- Re-signed right wing Shane Doan to a
multi-year contract.
Pittsburgh Penguins -- Named Chuck Grillo to their scouting
staff.
St. Louis Blues -- Signed defenseman Christian LaFlamme, who had
been with the Montreal Canadiens.
