BOSTON, Aug. 19 -- The Boston Red Sox signed veteran second baseman Quilvio Veras to a minor league contract Sunday.

Veras has been looking for a new team since being designated for assignment by the Atlanta Braves on July 31.

He will report to Class AAA Pawtucket of the International League. Prior to being let go by the Braves, Veras was batting .252 with three homers, 25 RBI and seven stolen bases in 71 games. Veras has battled injuries this season, spending time on the disabled list with a sprained ankle.

Veras, 30, could be a help to the Red Sox, who have struggled at the leadoff spot in the batting order. Jose Offerman, Trot Nixon and Nomar Garciaparra all have been used in the first spot in the order.

In 767 career games, Veras is a .270 hitter with 32 homers, 239 RBI and 183 stolen bases. He also has played with San Diego in his career and was a starter on the 1998 team that reached the World Series.
