Miroslav Satan awarded two-year contract

BUFFALO, Aug. 8 -- Miroslav Satan, the Buffalo Sabres' leading scorer last season, was awarded a two-year contract Wednesday by an arbitrator.

Satan, a Group II free agent, became the club's highest paid player and will reportedly earn $6.8 million over the next two seasons.

The ruling was made by arbitrator Claude H. Foisy.

Satan, a 26-year-old right wing, has led the defensive-minded Sabres in goal-scoring each of the last three seasons. In 2000-01, the Slovakian collected 29 goals and 33 assists while playing all 82 games.

"We are very pleased to have Miro signed for the next two seasons," general manager Darcy Reiger said. "His offensive production over the past four years has played a large part in the success of the Buffalo Sabres and we look forward to his continued success this season."

Acquired from Edmonton late in the 1996-97 season, Satan has 167 goals and 147 assists in 461 NHL games. He scored a career-best 40 goals in 1998-99.
