Griffin was limited to 44 games last season due to lower back pain and averaged only 2.1 points and 2.0 rebounds in 8.6 minutes per contest.

During his 1999-2000 rookie season, he averaged 6.7 points in 72 games, including 47 starts.

"This is the first step in strengthening our depth," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "We have always been a fan of his, although he has been slowed by injuries. He is healthy now and should strengthen our 2 and 3 positions. He is an excellent all-around player."

The 6-5 Griffin graduated from Seton Hall University in 1996, but went undrafted and played with the Connecticut Pride in the CBA for three seasons from 1996-99.

Griffin signed a 10-day contract with the Miami Heat on Jan. 21, 1999 but did not see any action. He signed with the Celtics on August 1, 1999.
