Bulls acquire Greg Anthony

CHICAGO, July 20 -- With Jamal Crawford perhaps out for the season with a serious knee injury, the Chicago Bulls Friday acquired point guard Greg Anthony from the Portland Trail Blazers.

Bulls general manager Jerry Krause made the move for Anthony after Crawford suffered what may be a torn ACL in his left knee during a pickup game three days ago.

The Trail Blazers will receive a second-round pick in the 2002 draft, the selection Chicago obtained from Toronto in the Charles Oakley deal.

The Bulls have not determined the extent of Crawford's injury, but Krause said, "the injury is not minor." If it is a torn ACL, then Crawford will likely miss the entire 2001-02 season.

Crawford, the eighth overall pick in the 2000 draft, will meet with team doctors on Saturday.

Anthony, 33, is to make $6 million over the next two years of his contract.

A 10-year veteran, Anthony watched his minutes shrink last season after the Trail Blazers signed Rod Strickland to serve as a backup to Damon Stoudamire and averaged just 4.9 points and 1.4 assists in 58 games.

Anthony and A.J. Guyton will likely split the point guard duties for Chicago.

A first-round pick of the New York Knicks in 1991, Anthony is best known for his hard-nosed defensive style and has also played for Vancouver and Seattle. He has career averages of 7.2 points and 3.9 assists.

The Bulls also renounced the rights to guard Bryce Drew, who started 41 of 48 games last season and averaged 6.3 points and 3.9 assists.

The 6-5, 180-pound Crawford averaged 4.6 points and 2.3 assists in 61 games as a rookie.

The Cleveland Cavaliers drafted Crawford and traded him and cash to the Bulls for Chris Mihm, the seventh overall pick in the 2000 draft.
