Flames sign veteran Whitmore

CALGARY, Alberta, July 9 -- The Calgary Flames added goaltending depth Monday by signing journeyman Kay Whitmore, who has played just five games in the NHL over the last six seasons.

The 34-year-old Whitmore will vie with veteran Mike Vernon to serve as the backup to newcomer Roman Turek, who was acquired on draft day as part of a four-player trade with the St. Louis Blues.
