International Hockey League to cease operations

DETROIT, June 4 -- After 56 years, the International Hockey League announced on Monday that it is ceasing operations.

Although the dissolution effective date is October 1, 2001, the IHL will begin winding up its affairs immediately.

"It is with great sadness that I make this announcement," said IHL president and chief executive officer Doug Moss. "With the landscape of minor league hockey continuing to evolve, the league's board of governors determined that this was a necessary decision."

Six teams from the IHL-Manitoba Moose, Milwaukee Admirals, Utah Grizzlies, Grand Rapids Griffins, Chicago Wolves and Houston Aeros-will join the American Hockey League for the 2001-02 season.

The Detroit Vipers, Orlando, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Kansas City folded operations.
