"(Assistant general manager) Jim Nill and I watched Fredrik play for Team Sweden in February," Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said. "Following the tournament, we asked if he was interested in returning to the National Hockey League.

"He's a very skilled player that can provide a threat from the blue line and will fit in our puck-control style of play. We're excited to have Fredrik as a member of the Red Wings."

Prior to playing in Switzerland, Olausson spent his two previous NHL seasons with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. The 6-2, 198-pounder also has played with Winnipeg, Edmonton and Pittsburgh in his career.

A 14-year NHL veteran, Olausson has played in 931 career games, tallying 143 goals and 415 assists. He also has appeared in 49 Stanley Cup playoff games and has four goals and 19 assists.
