'X-Men' leads with 10 Saturn nominations

LOS ANGELES, April 4 -- 'X-Men' leads with 10 Saturn nominations "X-Men," the screen adaptation of a popular comic book series, led the field with 10 nominations, as the Academy of Science fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films announced the nominees for the 27th annual Saturn Awards on Tuesday.

"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas" had eight nominations each.

"X-Men" was nominated for best science fiction film, along with "The Cell," "Hollow Man," "The 6th Day," "Space Cowboys" and "Titan A.E."

In the fantasy film category, the nominees for best film are "Chicken Run," "The Grinch," "Dinosaur," "Family Man, "Frequency" and "What Women Want."

The horror nominees are "Dracula 2000," "Final Destination," "The Gift," "Requiem for a Dream," "Urban Legend: Final Cut" and "What Lies Beneath."

"Charlie's Angels," "Crouching Tiger," "Gladiator," "The Patriot," "The Perfect Storm," "Traffic" and "Unbreakable" were nominated for best action/adventure/thriller film.

In addition to best science fiction film, "X-Men" was also nominated for best actor (Hugh Jackman); supporting actor (Patrick Stewart); supporting actress (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos); performance by a younger actor (Anna Paquin); director (Bryan Singer); writing (David Hayter); costume, makeup and special effects.

In the television categories, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" had six nominations, including best network television series, best actress (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and supporting actor and actress nominations for Anthony Stewart Head, James Masters, Alyson Hannigan and Michelle Trachtenebrg.

The nominees for best network series are "Angel," "Buffy," "Dark Angel," "Roswell," "Star Trek: Voyager" and "The X-Files."

"Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda," "The Beastmaster," "Farscape," "The Invisible Man," "The Outer Limits" and "Stargate: SG-1" were nominated for best syndicated/cable television series.

The academy also announced that it will present a special achievement award to the theatrical film, "Shadow of the Vampire" -- a fantasy take on the making of the silent classic, "Nosferatu."

The organization has renamed its top honor. It's now the Dr. Donald A. Reed President's Award, in memory of the founder of the academy, who died last month.

The Saturn Awards will be handed out on June 12 in ceremonies in Los Angeles.
