Potvin earns weekly NHL player honor

NEW YORK, April 2 -- Los Angeles Kings goaltender Felix Potvin, who recorded three shutouts in four games, has been named the NHL's Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday, April 1.

The 29-year-old Potvin opened the week by making 15 saves March 26 in a scoreless tie against the San Jose Sharks.

He turned aside 26 shots the next night in a 3-2 road win and, On March 29, Potvin made 27 saves in a 3-0 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets and recorded his second straight shutout two days later by stopping19 shots against the Colorado Avalanche.

For the week, Potvin went 2-1-1 with an 0.73 goals-against average to help the Kings move one point out of a playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Playing in his 10th NHL season, Potvin has posted a 25-21-7 record in 54 games with a 2.67 GAA. He was acquired by the Kings Feb. 15 in a trade with the Vancouver Canucks.

Others considered for the weekly award were Buffalo Sabres goaltender Dominik Hasek, Pittsburgh Penguins center Mario Lemieux and right wings Jaromir Jagr of the Penguins and New Jersey's Alexander Mogilny.
