Sakic earns weekly player honor

NEW YORK, March 26 -- Colorado Avalanche center Joe Sakic, who had eight points in three games, has been named the NHL's Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday, March 25.

Sakic had three goals, five assists and was plus-three in helping Colorado remain at the top of the league's standings.

He opened the week with a goal and two assists in a 4-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks and did the same in a 3-1 win over St. Louis. His scoring streak reached nine games Saturday when he had a goal and an assist in a 4-2 victory in Boston.

In his 13th NHL season, Sakic was one of eight players selected Friday to represent Canada in the 2002 Winter Olympics. He leads the league scoring race with 108 points, his fifth career 100-point campaign.

Others considered for the weekly award were Dallas Stars right wing Brett Hull and Nashville Predaaors goaltender Tomas Vokoun.NEWLN:
