Elias earns weekly NHL honor

NEW YORK, March 5 -- Left wing Patrik Elias, who scored 11 points in helping the New Jersey Devils post four consecutive victories, Monday was named the NHL's Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday, March 4.

Elias scored four goals and added seven assists while compiling a plus-minus rating of +10.

He opened the week with two goals and an assist in a 6-3 victory over Florida, tallied two assists in a 4-1 win over the New York Islanders, posted two goals and two assists in a 7-3 rout of Carolina and notched two assists in a 6-0 rout of Tampa Bay.

In his fourth NHL season, the 24-year-old native of the town of Trebic in the Czech Republic, has 26 goals and 42 assists in 65 games. He leads the Devils in scoring and ranks 15th in the NHL in points.

Other players considered for the award were right wing Jaromir Jagr of Pittsburgh, defenseman Sandis Ozolinsh of Carolina, and goaltender Jose Theodore of Montreal and Martin Brodeur of New Jersey.
