Rachunek top NHL rookie in January

NEW YORK, Feb. 1 -- Defenseman Karel Rachunek, who had a plus-9 rating in 14 games while helping the Ottawa Senators to a sparkling 10-2-2-1 record, Thursday was named NHL Rookie of the Month for January.

Rachunek had one goal and nine assists while averaging 24:27 minutes per game. He led all rookies in assists and plus-minus rating.

He had two-assist performances Jan. 18 against Washington and Jan. 20 against Tampa Bay as Ottawa posted victories in both games.

Also considered for the award were Nashville left wing Marian Cisar, Minnesota left wing Marian Gaborik and Carolina right wing Shane Willis.
