Tanguay earns weekly NHL honor

NEW YORK, Jan. 22 -- Left wing Alex Tanguay, who recorded nine points in leading the Colorado Avalanche to four wins, Monday was named NHL Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday, Jan. 21.

His best performance came on Tuesday, when he recorded a career-best five points (two goals, three assists) in a 7-3 home victory over the Vancouver Canucks.

On Sunday, he notched his game-winning goal and an assist in a 4-2 road triumph over the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.

Tanguay had a plus-minus rating of plus-7 for the week.

In his second NHL season, the 21-year-old Tanguay has recorded 50 points (19 goals, 31 assists) in 49 games and ranks 15th in the NHL scoring race. He also ranks second in the league in shooting percentage (23.8) and third in plus-minus rating (plus-29).

Among those also considered for the award were Colorado right wing Milan Hejduk, centers Alexei Yashin of Ottawa and Daniel Briere of Phoenix, and goaltenders Mike Dunham of the Nashville Predators and Tommy Salo of the Edmonton Oilers.NEWLN:
