Sixers to retire Barkley's number

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 5 -- Former NBA superstar forward Charles Barkley, who retired at the end of last season, will have his number 34 retired by the Philadelphia 76ers.

The team announced Friday that Barkley, one of only three players with 20,000 points, 10,000 rebounds and 4,000 assists, will become the seventh player in team history to have his jersey retired when the ceremony takes place during halftime of the game March 30 against the Golden State Warriors.

Barkley, the fifth overall pick in the 1984 NBA draft out of Auburn, spent his first eight seasons in Philadelphia, where he averaged 23.3 points, 11.6 rebounds in 610 games. He is fourth in franchise history in scoring with 14,184 points and third in total rebounds with 7,079.

Other 76ers to have their numbers retired are Wilt Chamberlain (13), Julius Erving (6), Maurice Cheeks (10), Hal Greer (15), Billy Cunningham (32) and Bobby Jones (24).
