Gordon captured the pole on Friday with a lap of 194.274 miles per hour around the 1.54-mile track. It was the 33rd pole of his Winston Cup career.

NASCAR Winston Cup racing celebrates a new champion in Bobby Labonte, who clinched the championship last week in Miami. Labonte qualified ninth Friday.

Now that Labonte -- who is the defending champion of the NAPA 500 -- has wrapped up the championship, the spotlight has dimmed considerably for this race.

Gordon's Hendrick Motorsports teammate, Jerry Nadeau, will start on the outside of the front row after a lap of 193.299 mph in a Chevrolet.

Defending Winston Cup champion Dale Jarrett qualified third at 193.157 mph in a Ford Taurus. Rookie Dave Blaney starts fourth in a Pontiac Grand Prix with his best qualifying effort of the season at 192.553 mph. Todd Bodine rounds out the top five in a Ford.NEWLN:
