Flames get Kravchuk from Ottawa

CALGARY, Alberta, Nov. 10 -- With Derek Morris continuing his holdout, the Calgary Flames Friday claimed veteran defenseman Igor Kravchuk off waivers from the Ottawa Senators.

The 34-year-old Kravchuk, who was in his fourth season with the Senators, has one goal and five assists with a plus-4 rating and 14 penalty minutes in 15 games this season.

The Flames apparently are not close to reaching a contract agreement with Morris, who recorded nine goals and 29 assists with a plus-2 rating last season.

Kravchuk has played in 577 NHL games over 10 seasons with Chicago, Edmonton, St. Louis and Ottawa, collecting 60 goals, 179 assists and 224 minutes in penalties. The 6-1, 218-pounder starred for CSKA Moscow before he began his NHL career with Chicago in 1991-92.

After waiving Kravchuk, the Senators signed defenseman Jamie Rivers to a multi-year contract.

Rivers, who has played in 228 career NHL games with St. Louis and the New York Islanders, began the 2000-01 season with Grand Rapids of the International Hockey League.

In 75 games with the Islanders last season, Rivers, 25, had one goal, 16 assists and a minus-4 rating with 84 penalty minutes.

Rivers, an Ottawa native, played parts of four seasons with the Blues before being claimed by the Islanders in the 1999 waiver draft.
