Panthers sign Adams, acquire Eriksson

SUNRISE, Fla., Nov. 6 -- The Florida Panthers, who rank last in the NHL in scoring and have just one win in their first 12 games, Monday signed veteran left wing Greg Adams and acquired defenseman Anders Eriksson from the Chicago Blackhawks.

Adams, an unrestricted free agent who spent the last two seasons with the Phoenix Coyotes, signed a one-year deal.

Eriksson was obtained for Jaroslav Spacek in a swap of defensemen.

The 37-year-old Adams is coming off back-to-back 19-goal campaigns and is a four-time 30-goal scorer. He broke into the NHL as an undrafted free agent with the New Jersey Devils in 1984 and recorded a career-best 77 points the following season on 35 goals and 42 assists.

Adams was traded to Vancouver following the 1986-87 season and scored a career-high 36 goals in his first campaign with the Canucks. After 7 1/2 seasons with Vancouver, he moved on to the Dallas Stars before joining the Coyotes as a free agent in 1998.

Eriksson, 25, joins his third team in as many seasons. Obtained from the Detroit Red Wings in March 1999 as the key player in the Chris Chelios trade, the 6-3, 214-pound Swede was Chicago's top scoring defenseman this season with two goals and three assists in 13 games.
