Mavericks acquire Loy Vaught from Pistons

DALLAS, Oct. 17 -- The Dallas Mavericks acquired forward Loy Vaught from the Detroit Pistons Tuesday for guards Dana Barros and Ansu Sesay in the second offseason deal between the teams.

The trade had been reported for several days, but was announced officially Tuesday, after the Mavericks signed Sesay.

Over the summer, the Mavericks acquired forward Christian Laettner and forward-center Terry Mills from the Pistons for forwards Cedric Ceballos and John Wallace, guard Eric Murdock and cash. Mills later was waived.

The Mavs have been the busiest team in the league in the offseason, although none of the wheeling and dealing has involved anything like an established star.

Vaught, a 10-year-veteran, has averaged 10.7 points and 7.4 rebounds in 638 NBA games. He spent his first eight seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers and was with the Pistons the last two campaigns.

His best season was 1995-96 when he averaged 16.2 points and 10.1 rebounds.

Barros, acquired by the Mavericks in the four-team deal that also brought Howard Eisley from Utah and Bill Curley from Golden State, has averaged 10.8 points per game over an 11-year career.

He is a career 41.3 percent shooter from three-point range and holds the NBA record for consecutive games with a three-pointer (89). Barros has played with Seattle, Philadelphia and Boston.

Sesay, a 6-9 forward, was taken by the Mavericks with the 30th pick in the 1998 draft. He was named Southeastern Conference Player of the Year as a senior at Mississippi, where he became the second player in school history to record 1,000 points, 600 rebounds and 200 assists. Sesay has yet to play in the NBA.
