Roy wins weekly NHL player honor

NEW YORK, Oct. 16 -- Colorado Avalanche goaltender Patrick Roy, who tied Terry Sawchuk as the NHL's all-time regular-season wins leader, Monday was rewarded with the first regular season Player of the Week award for the period ending Sunday, Oct. 15.

Roy, who turned 35 on Oct. 5, has gotten his 17th season off to a flying start with a 3-0-2 record, 1.35 goals-against average and .935 save percentage. He owns a career mark of 447-264-105 in 846 games with Montreal and Colorado.

Roy will attempt to break Sawchuk's record on Tuesday night in Washington against the Capitals.

It was the ninth career Player of Week award for Roy, who beat out Los Angeles teammates Luc Robitaille and Zigmund Palffy and Boston's Jason Allison.NEWLN:
