San Jose 5, Boston 2

SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 14 -- Vincent Damphousse became the 58th player ever to reach 1,000 points and Patrick Marleau and Scott Thornton scored 61 seconds apart in the third period Saturday night to lead the San Jose Sharks to a 5-2 victory over the Boston Bruins.

Rookie goalie Evgeni Nabokov, starting in place of the injured Steve Shields, stopped 21 shots for his third NHL win and first this season.

Damphousse reached the milestone when he set up Marco Sturm's shorthanded breakaway goal in the first period. He has 368 goals and 632 assists in a 14-year, 1,090-game career. He also collected his 500th NHL point against Boston as a member of the Montreal Canadiens on March 1, 1993.

The Sharks took their first lead, 3-2, with 10:30 left when defenseman Mike Rathje fired a shot from the blue line that deflected off Marleau's skate and into the net.

Thornton added his first of the season to double the lead. He kept the puck in along the boards and found Niklas Sundstrom in the slot. Sundstrom passed back to Thornton, who put a wrist shot past rookie goaltender Andrew Raycroft.

Mike Ricci also scored and Sundstrom finished with two assists for the Sharks, who beat the Bruins for only the second time in 16 all-time meetings (2-10-4). San Jose is 2-5-2 at home against Boston.

Sturm added an empty-net tally, becoming the first Shark to score two shorthanded goals in a game since Jamie Baker on Jan. 6, 1996 against Los Angeles.

Sergei Samsonov and Jason Allison scored for the Bruins, who have dropped two in a row following a three-game winning streak.
