Sabres sign backup goalie

BUFFALO, Oct. 6 -- Just three days after signing a free agent contract with the Boston Bruins, goaltender Peter Skudra was claimed off waivers Friday by the Buffalo Sabres.

Buffalo was forced into the market for a backup goaltender after Dominik Hasek was placed on injured reserve with a minor knee injury suffered in Thursday's season opener against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Skudra, 27, will play behind rookie Mika Noronen while Hasek is sidelined.

"Peter gives us a proven NHL-caliber goaltender," Sabres general manager Darcy Regier said. "He gives us more depth at the goaltender position."

Skudra, a native of Latvia, played in 20 games with the Pittsburgh Penguins last season and compiled a 5-7-3 record with a 3.12 goals against average. He is 26-22-11 with a 2.65 goals against average and four shutouts in 74 career NHL games.

Hasek played just 35 games last season due to a series of groin injuries.
