Cubs sign Jerry Spradlin

CHICAGO, Sept. 8 -- The Chicago Cubs Friday signed righthanded reliever Jerry Spradlin, who was released by the Kansas City Royals on Aug. 30.

The 33-year-old Spradlin made 49 appearances out of the bullpen for the Royals this season, going 4-4 with seven saves and a 5.16 ERA. He allowed 46 runs and 78 hits over 75 innings.

Spradlin was in his first season with the Royals after splitting the 1999 campaign between Cleveland and San Francisco. He has also spent time with Philadelphia.
