Canucks sign Bryan Helmer

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Aug. 21 -- The Vancouver Canucks added another veteran to their blue line Monday when they signed unrestricted free agent defenseman Bryan Helmer.

Helmer, 28, had a goal and an assist in 15 games with the St. Louis Blues last season. He spent most of the campaign in the American Hockey League with Worcester, totaling 10 goals, 25 assists and 124 penalty minutes in 54 games.

The 6-1, 200-pound Helmer has a goal and five assists in 55 NHL games with Phoenix and St. Louis. His signing comes a week after the Canucks agreed to terms with unrestricted free agent defenseman Scott Lachance.NEWLN:
