Senators sign Derek King

KANATA, Ont., Aug. 10 -- Unrestricted free agent left wing Derek King signed a multi-year contract Thursday with the Ottawa Senators, who also avoided arbitration with Jason York by signing the defenseman to a one-year, $1.4 million deal.

The 33-year-old winger split last season bewteen the Toronto Maple Leafs and St. Louis Blues, combining for two goals and seven assists in 22 games. He also played 52 games with Grand Rapids of the International Hockey League.

King spent his first 11 seasons with the New York Islanders, scoring a career-high 40 goals in 1991-92 and totaling 38 the following season. The 6-1, 203-pounder has 261 goals and 351 assists in 830 NHL games with the Islanders, Hartford, Toronto and St. Louis.

York, 30, was an unrestricted free agent who scored a career-high eight goals and had 22 assists and 60 penalty minutes in 79 games last season. The Ottawa native ranks seventh on the Senators' list in games (306) and penalty minutes (237) while placing eighth in assists (83) and points (102).

Acquired from Anaheim on the eve of the 1996-97 season, the 6-1, 200-pound York has 24 goals and 116 assists in 419 NHL games with Detroit, Anaheim and the Senators.
