Capitals sign Rob Zettler

WASHINGTON, Aug. 2 -- The Washington Capitals Wednesday signed unrestricted free agent defenseman Rob Zettler to a one-year contract. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Zettler spent most of last season with Portland of the American Hockey League and tallied two goals, two assists and 27 penalty minutes in 23 games.

He was recalled by Washington on March 6 and had two assists in 12 regular season games, and also played in all five games of Washington's Eastern Conference first-round playoff loss to Pittsburgh.

The 32-year-old Zettler signed with Washington as a free agent on Sept. 7. He was drafted by the Minnesota North Stars in 1986 and also has played for San Jose, Philadelphia, Toronto and Nashville, totaling four goals, 57 assists and 809 penalty minutes in 491 NHL games.
