Bruins agree to deal with Kovalenko

BOSTON, July 25 -- The Boston Bruins continued a busy offseason Tuesday by agreeing to a one-year contract with free agent right wing Andrei Kovalenko.

Financial terms were not disclosed for Kovalenko, who will be counted on as a scorer after playing for the Carolina Hurricanes last season.

The 30-year-old Kovalenko, who joins his sixth organization, had 15 goals and 24 assists for 39 points in 76 games last season. A native of Russia, he joined the NHL in 1992-93 with Quebec after playing for the powerful Central Red Army Team. He also has played for Montreal, Edmonton and Philadelphia and has 157 goals and 185 assists for 342 points in 544 games.

His most productive season was in 1996-97 for Edmonton, when he had 32 goals and 81 points. He also reached 20 goals in his rookie season with Quebec and in 1995-96 for Colorado and Montreal.

Kovalenko is the third free agent signed by the Bruins this summer, joining defensemen Paul Coffey and Peter Popovic.
