"We're very pleased to re-sign Brent," said General Manager Ken Holland said. "He's a very valuable player who can fill a number of different roles on the ice."

Last season, Gilchrist missed the first 56 games before playing 24 of the final 26 contests and totaling four goals and two assists. He was scoreless in six playoff games.

Gilchrist played only five games in 1998-99, his second season in Detroit after signing as a free agent in August 1997.

"Brent persevered through 18 months of injuries and surgeries. He was finally healthy at the end of last season and through the playoffs, and we're looking forward to having him back at 100 percent this year," Holland said.

In 646 NHL games with Montreal, Edmonton, Minnesota-Dallas and the Red Wings, Gilchrist has 130 goals and 154 assists for 284 points.
