METAIRIE, La., July 16 -- The New Orleans Saints continued their offseason spending binge Sunday by signing free agent outside linebacker Darrin Smith to a one-year contract.
Smith will compete with incumbent Keith Mitchell for the Saints' starting strongside linebacker position in training camp.
He is the fifth prominent defensive player to sign with the Saints since last season, joining tackle Norman Hand, linebacker Charlie Clemons, cornerback Steve Israel and safety Darren Perry.
Smith, 30, spent the last two seasons of his eight-year NFL career with the Seattle Seahawks. He started 15 games at strongside linebacker last season and finished with 90 tackles, one sack, one interception and three passes defensed.
A second-round pick of Dallas in 1993, Smith was a reserve on the 1993 Super Bowl-winning team and a starter on the 1995 championship squad. After four years with the Cowboys, he signed as a free agent with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1997 but was bothered by hamstring problems and waived after the season.NEWLN:
