Quilvio Veras out for the season

BALTIMORE, July 15 -- Atlanta Braves second baseman Quilvio Veras will miss the remainder of the season after tearing his right anterior cruciate ligament on Friday night.

The Braves learned the extent of the injury Saturday and placed the 29-year-old Veras on the 15-day disabled list.

To fill the roster spot, they recalled infielder Steve Sisco from Richmond of the International League.

Veras was hurt during a first-inning rundown in Friday's 4-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles, but remained in the game. In the fourth inning, he crumpled to the ground while attempting a swing and was removed from the contest.

In the midst of a career year in his first season with the Braves, Veras was batting .309 with five homers and 37 RBI in 84 games. He was acquired from San Diego in December.

In the first four-plus years of his career, Veras never batted higher than .280, which he hit for the Padres last season.

Veras spent three seasons in San Diego after two years with the Florida Marlins. He hit a career-high six homers in each of the past two seasons and drove in a career-high 45 runs in both 1997 and 1998.

Originally signed by the New York Mets as a non-drafted free agent in November 1989, Veras will be a free agent after this season.
