German Titov signs with Ducks

ANAHEIM, July 1 -- Unrestricted free agent German Titov agreed to terms on a multi-year contract Saturday with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, who become his fourth team in just over three seasons.

Terms were not disclosed for Titov, who was paid $1.2 million whilesplitting last season between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Edmonton Oilers.

He had 17 goals and 25 assists in 63 games with Pittsburgh but was quoted in a Russian newspaper as saying then-Penguins coach Herb Brooks' practice methods were "idiotic." While he denied making those comments, Titov was shipped to Edmonton at the March 14 trade deadline for center Josef Beranek.

"We are very happy German has accepted our offer to join the Mighty Ducks," general manager Pierre Gauthier said. "He is a proven 50-point scorer in the NHL and brings versatility and experience to our exciting young club."

The 6-1, 203-pound Russian was taken in the 10th round of the 1993 draft by Calgary and spent his first five seasons with the Flames. He scored 27 goals as a rookie and had a career-high 28 while playing all 82 games in 1995-96.

Titov was traded to Pittsburgh as part of a four-player deal on June 17, 1998.
