ORANGE PARK, Fla., June 29 -- Clay County, Fla., sheriff's deputies instituted a 24-hour guard on an Orange Park cemetery as they work to identify vandals who Thursday desecrated the graves of Ronnie VanZant and Steve Gaines, two members of the rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd.
VanZant and Gaines were killed along with four others when the band's plane crashed in 1977.
The mausoleum at Jacksonville Memorial Gardens that held VanZant's casket was broken open and the casket had been pulled out of the vault and left on the ground, but remained sealed.
Sheriff's spokeswoman Mary Justino said the urn containing Gaines' remains was removed and some of the ashes may have been spilled on the ground. Soil from the area is being tested for evidence of human remains.
The graves of VanZant and Gaines were among five disturbed by the vandals.
Investigators took casts of footprints from the scene and also found some fingerprints.NEWLN:
