Wendel Clark retires from NHL

TORONTO, June 29 -- The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Thursday that former captain and six-time 30-goal scorer Wendel Clark had retired.

Clark, 33, began and ended his career with the Maple Leafs, who made him the first pick in the 1985 draft and brought him back in January after he was released by Chicago.

He retires with 330 goals, 234 assists and 1,690 penalty minutes in 793 NHL games, also playing for Quebec, the New York Islanders, Tampa Bay and Detroit. Clark had three stints with the Leafs, playing with them for his first nine NHL seasons.

"No matter what number of teams he played for, Wendel is a Leaf, a great Leaf," Toronto president Ken Dryden said. "Some players are measured by the numbers next to his name. For Wendel Clark, it is the affection the city of Toronto and Leafs fans everywhere hold for him."

Clark was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team in 1986 after scoring 34 goals in 66 games, finishing second to Gary Suter in voting for the Calder Trophy. He also was an All-Star that season.

A native of Kelvington, Saskatchewan, Clark made his only other All-Star appearance in 1999, finishing with 32 goals for Tampa Bay and Detroit.
