Cubs put Gutierrez on DL

SAN FRANCISCO, May 26 -- A freak injury the day after his 30th birthday has interrupted the career season of Chicago Cubs shortstop Ricky Gutierrez, who Friday was place on the 15-day disabled list.

Gutierrez was injured two days ago.

His move to the DL was made retroactive to Thursday.

In Wednesday's 9-4 loss at Colorado, Gutierrez was running to first base when a twinge in his hamstring caused him to pull up lame. He fell to the ground and separated his right, or throwing, shoulder in the process.

In 44 games this season, Gutierrez is batting .315 - lifting his career mark to .264 -- with a career-high seven homers and 27 RBI.

To take his place on the roster, the Cubs recalled infielder Chad Meyers, the leading base-stealer in the Pacific Coast League, from Triple-A Iowa.
