Rico Brogna has surgery on forearm

PHILADELPHIA, May 12 -- Rico Brogna, who was expected to be a key component in the Philadelphia Phillies lineup, had two pins placed in his left forearm Friday and will be sidelined until early August.

Less than 24 hours after being placed on the 15-day disabled list, Brogna underwent successful surgery on his fractured left ulna bone.

Brogna suffered the injury when hit by a pitch in the ninth inning of Wednesday's 8-0 win in Montreal.

"Rico had what is described as an oblique or unstable fracture," Phillies team physician Dr. Michael Ciccotti. "When we examined his x-rays yesterday, they showed that the fracture had already shifted when compared to the x-rays we had taken in Montreal.

"That's why it was important to pin it. Two pins were placed through the fracture to keep it in place."

Brogna will be in a cast four to six weeks, then need six weeks to rehabilitate the forearm and regain flexibility in his wrist.

"I am disappointed, but there is nothing I can do about it," Brogna said on Thursday. "All I can do is wait until it heals and hope I won't be out that long. I'll be there to encourage my teammates as much as possible."
