Carjacker sentenced to life

PONTIAC, Mich., April 5 -- A suburban Detroit man who wanted a set of wheels for his prom is facing life in prison for carjacking and killing an engineering student.

Akil Logan, 20, apologized for killing Jason Guzik, 25, of Sterling Heights, Mich., saying, "I'm sorry this had to happen" before Circuit Judge Richard Kuhn imposed the sentence Tuesday.

In what Wednesday's Detroit Free Press described as a sometimes incoherent statement, Logan said: "I do know this was a loss of life that should never be taken over a vehicle. There is a lot of anger, a lot of hatred that I had something to do with it."

Logan was convicted of first-degree murder. Two accomplices also are serving life sentences.
