AUSTIN, Texas, March 21 (UPI) -- Texas Gov. George W. Bush, the apparent Republican presidential nominee, said Tuesday that Attorney General Janet Reno should reconsider her plans to send Elian Gonzalez back to Cuba and let a Florida family court decide the issue.
U.S. District Judge K. Michael Moore in Florida ruled Tuesday against the Miami family of 6-year-old refugee Elian Gonzalez, saying the child has no right to a political asylum hearing, but Bush said a family court should hear what Elian's father has to say.
"Elian's mother gave her life in the hopes that her son would have a better life in freedom," he said. "We still do not know what Elian's father really wants, and we will not until he and his family are allowed to come to America to freely express their will."
Bush urged Reno to reconsider her plans to send the boy back to Cuba. "This case should be decided by a Florida family court, which will protect the best interests of Elian, not by a Clinton-Gore Justice Department whose record of putting politics ahead of the law does not inspire confidence," he said.
