Flyers, Coyotes work trade

PHOENIX, March 8 (UPI) -- The Philadelphia Flyers Wednesday re-acquired right wing Rick Tocchet from the Phoenix Coyotes for much-traveled right wing Mikael Renberg.

Tocchet, 35, has 12 goals, 17 assists and 67 penalty minutes in 64 games this season, his 16th in the NHL. He played his first seven-plus campaigns with the Flyers, scoring at least 40 goals twice and going to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1985 and 1987.

Renberg joins his third team in just under 15 months. He scored 38 goals for Philadelphia as a rookie in 1993-94 and later played on the "Legion of Doom" line with Eric Lindros and John LeClair, but has not approached that production the past several seasons.

The Flyers acquired another tough player for the playoffs, having already added enforcer Gino Odjick on Feb. 15. When healthy, Tocchet can score and fight. He is one of two players in NHL history to have at least 400 goals and 2,500 penalty minutes.

But Tocchet has been limited by injuries throughout the second half of his career. He played in 81 games last season, his highest total since appearing in 80 with Pittsburgh in 1992-93.

Tocchet had his best season with the Penguins, recording 48 goals and 61 assists while playing with Mario Lemieux, but made a name for himself with Philadelphia, totaling 214 goals and 249 assists in 541 games.

He has 423 goals, 485 assists and 2,838 penalty minutes in 1,054 NHL games, also playing for Boston, Washington and Los Angeles.

Renberg has eight goals and 21 assists in 62 games during another disappointing season. He has just 39 goals and 66 assists since 1997-98 while being shuttled between Philadelphia and Tampa Bay.

The 27-year-old Swede was dealt from the Flyers to the Lightning with Karl Dykhuis and three first-round picks on Aug. 20, 1997 and back to Philadelphia with Daymond Langkow for Chris Gratton and Mike Sillinger on Dec. 12, 1998.

He has 148 goals, 198 assists and 248 penalty minutes in 454 NHL games, recording a Flyers' rookie record 82 points in 1993-94. He could get a chance to revive his career on one of Phoenix's top scoring lines.
