Giants sign 3b Russ Davis

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- The San Francisco Giants Monday signed third baseman Russ Davis to a minor league contract.

Davis, 30, batted .245 with 21 homers and 59 RBI in 124 games for the Seattle Mariners last season.

He committed only 12 errors and finished second among American League third baseman with a .958 fielding percentage.

Davis was a 29th-round draft pick of the New York Yankees in 1988. He saw limited action in New York before being traded to the Mariners in December 1995 as part of the deal that sent Tino Martinez to the Yankees.

He enjoyed his best season in 1998, when he hit 20 homers and drove in 82 runs in 141 games for Seattle. He holds the distinction of being the first player to homer in Seattle's new ballpark, Safeco Field.
