NEW YORK, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Veteran broadcaster Dick Enberg made it official Wednesday, joining CBS Sports as a play-by-play announcer for NFL, college basketball and U.S. Open tennis telecasts.
Terms of the contract were not disclosed for Enberg, who also will contribute to The Masters and the PGA Championship broadcasts.
Enberg spent 25 years with NBC Sports and his departure was expected after the network lost NFL broadcast rights to CBS two seasons ago.
"Dick Enberg is recognized as one of the premier broadcasters in sports television," CBS Sports president Sean McManus said. "There are few who can boast his accomplishments in the past century. His passion for sports, including NFL football, is reflected in everything he has done. We are extremely excited to welcome Dick to CBS Sports."
Enberg will make his CBS debut on Saturday when he pairs with Billy Packer for a college basketball game between St. John's and Ohio State. The duo's last assignment together was the 1981 NCAA title game between Indiana and North Carolina on NBC.
Enberg will be paired with Dan Dierdorf on NFL broadcasts with Dierdorf's NFL partner this past season, Verne Lundquist, becoming the lead announcer on the CBS college football telecasts.
A winner of nine Emmy Awards, Enberg's assignments include the Super Bowl (eight times), the Rose Bowl (nine times), the Orange Bowl (six times), the Olympics (four times), the French Open (16 times), Wimbledon (19 times), the U.S. Open Golf Championship (four times), the NCAA basketball Final Four (five times) and the World Series (once).
CBS made room for Enberg on its broadcasting roster by not renewing the contract of Sean McDonough.
