Utah 73, Southern Utah 56
SALT LAKE CITY, Jan. 1 (UPI) -- Hanno Mottola continued his strong play with 20 points Saturday night as No. 24 Utah overcame fatigue to defeat Southern Utah, 73-56, and match Murray State for the longest current homecourt winning streak in Division I.
After sitting out the first eight games of the season with a knee injury, Mottola is averaging 24 points in his last five contests.
Alex Jensen added 15 points for the Utes (11-2), who have won 45 straight at the Huntsman Center.
Playing its third game in five days, Utah could not shake Southern Utah and led by only 13 with two minutes remaining.
Nate Altoff added 13 points and eight rebounds for the Utes after missing three contests with a sprained ankle.
Jeff Monaco scored 13 points for the Thunderbirds (4-8), who have dropped four of their last five. Southern Utah fell to 1-9 all-time against teams ranked in the top 25 since making the jump to Division I in 1988.
